As Mario, Bongers was wonderful, even in his difficult opening aria, in which Puccini writes directly into the register break of the tenor voice. He has a free upper register and a secure full tone in the sweeping lyrical phrases, and he built "E lucevan le stelle" (And the stars shone) to a natural climax. His best acting moment came in Act III when Tosca tells him about the orders for his execution. She believes it's a charade but he clearly sees through the trick and genuinely grieves. But he gallantly keeps it from Tosca. Although some people understand the dynamics of this scene, Bongers expressed the emotions clearly, and made the audience feel his brief hope dying, and then his effort to swallow the knowledge and to put on a good face for his love (not always successfully)

…another tour de force performance as the hapless Corporal Don Jose… Bongers throws caution to the winds, using his powerful tenor to portray the terrible emotions and conflict that Don Jose goes through, with palpable effect.
Palo Alto Daily News – CARMEN – Don Jose

…Bongers has a pure, buttery tenor that I hope to hear again on the West Bay Opera stage.
Palo Alto Daily News – DER FLIEGENDE HOLLANDER – Erik

Tenor Benjamin  Bongers, filling in just that one night of March 10, was duly boisterous, impulsive, and youthful, and he sang with pulse-quickening excitement---a true talent of the future. His task was doubly demanding as he was forced to play both Siegmund and Siegfried, having to die twice the same night (!).

... Canio (Benjamin Bongers) gave a bravura  performance as the angry clown. While possessing a tenor voice with dramatic quality he managed to demonstrate an amazing physical agility... the man carried the opera, especially that most famous of tenor arias Vesti la giuba, the very heartbeat, the highlight of the opera
